The God Xolotl and the Journey to Mictlán
The name Xoloitzcuintli comes from the Aztec god Xolotl (the god of fire and lightning) and Itzcuintli (dog). According to legend, Xolotl created the dog from a sliver of the Bone of Life to protect the living.
Aztecs believed these dogs guided the souls of the deceased through the treacherous journey to Mictlán (the underworld). Without a Xolo by their side, a soul could remain lost in darkness forever.
